So my brother and I have been all about social media, e-commerce, and internet marketing lately. It got me thinking, your foot into marketing and business can start on the small scale–HIGH SCHOOL! Gasps?! Well calm down & follow me on this epic adventure…
Think about it. Proms, school carnivals, football games, basketball games, DODGEBALL GAMES (a personal favorite from my high school) are all things that need to be promoted to the student body. Getting the student body involved is the entire focus of high school leadership committees. So why then did we never utilize social networking to promote such events?! Beats me!
On average teenagers sign into a social networking site at least 3 times a day. Now say the commissioners of student events or whomever in charge understood this statistic and used facebook, myspace, tumblr, twitter (although twitter wasn’t out yet when I was in high school lol) to their advantage. The number of students who heard of the event would of been VASTLY larger. As kids from my school would say, “damn near err bodyyy” would have known.
Getting the event “out there” wouldn’t have been the only benefit of implementing social media but the fact that these sites are riddled with all of your friends who discuss events could only raise awareness ten-fold. Shoot, the amount of attendees would have increased ten-fold! In high school, socializing is the main scene. Everyone wants to go where their friends are going, places where their circle will be seen, where the cool kids are, etc. Events being posted on social media give insight as to who’s going, which circles, your friends–DONE DEAL AMATEUR MARKETING AGENT. Teenagers will follow the crowd–”Damn near err body” would follow the crowd. Say the cutie from homeroom is going to tonight’s football game, Jane Doe has had a crush on him since middle school, she logs onto her computer & sees a post “FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS! Edison vs. Stagg. Be there!” and underneath is a comment from cutie-patootie Johnny, “Yeah guys. Be there or be a square! lol” (he might be cute, but a bit of a dork haha) best believe Jane will attend at the chance of running into her eye candy. Teenage hormones can only benefit marketing of an event
Point blank: I regret not taking advantage of these sites when I was Commissioner of Rallies for my class. Posters and signs just don’t cut it anymore! I am a direct product of the social media generation. It's about time I start to take advantage of it. BLOOP.
